Some of you will have heard me mention Maverick the Mule, and I thought it was about time I shared a little more of his story!
Maverick arrived with me in 2025, having come over from friends at Positive Horse Training in Spain. Like any new partnership, our journey together has had its ups and downs, but it has been incredibly rewarding to see how far he has come.
We spent a lot of time building our relationship through groundwork and in-hand work, focusing on developing trust, communication and confidence. Taking the time to get these foundations right was so important, allowing us to progress at a pace that suited Maverick and helping us build a partnership based on understanding and mutual respect.
After months of preparation, I finally backed him this spring, and he has taken to it brilliantly! Watching him adapt to this new experience and seeing his confidence grow has been such a special part of our journey together.
Since then, we have already enjoyed some wonderful adventures. We have completed a couple of endurance rides together, giving us the opportunity to put our training into practice out in the real world, and we also spent a weekend at a TREC camp with Lucy from The Wild Equestrian. It has been fantastic to explore new experiences together and continue developing our partnership beyond the yard.
Working with Maverick has been a reminder of just how rewarding it can be to take things slowly, build trust and allow an animal the time and space to develop at their own pace. Every milestone feels special when you know how much work has gone into getting there.
It has been such an incredible experience so far, and I am excited to see what the future holds for us. Maverick really is one special mule, and I feel very lucky to be part of his journey.
